I was just thinking about this because I definitely am more of a night owl than an early bird and I know many other writers that also like to burn the midnight oil. Some say that's when they do their best work.

What are you and what's your take on that?

It's not that I want to be a night owl, but sometimes night is the best time to compose a story. It's quiet.

If I sit down and try and write during the day, it is a real struggle and often I end up rewriting it all later that night anyway! I definitely do my best work in the wee hours of the morning. I sleep better after a good long writing session too! :-)

Definately do more writing  at night. Actually, I'm usually up till 4 or 5 in the morning writing on the weekends. I put my music on and just start typing away.

Former early bird now transformed into a night owl...it's now 1:32 a.m. and I'm trolling all my favorite social media sites for ways to connect.

However, when it comes to work, I need to hit my desk first thing and knock it out early. Otherwise, my head fills up with distractions and I never quite get on track. So my resistance to sleep is not helping my productivity.

I think you are "write" on the money when you say we writers do our thing when the moon is out . I am a Chef that works a 4 to midnight shift and when I get home , settled in, I write, sometimes till the crack of dawn....I think it is the peace the night brings and also the shadows.  ..Joshua Heights.... http://joshuaheights.weebly.com/index.html
I'm looking at the clock now and it's almost half past midnight. I can see 4 online here just now so I guess some of us at least are more night owls than early birds! :)

Well just to buck the trend I will add my penny's worth.

I am lucky enough to write when I want to, no matter the time of day, most of the time. Partly because I run my own company and that takes a lot of my time so I am limited in how much of the day I can devout to the writing. I am writing now and its lunch time here in Scotland. Once I am in the story to be honest the actual time becomes moot, the writing world just takes all my attention. You should see how high I jump when someone invades my space. Anyway talking of writing it is time to return to the Everlasting and Fantastical Adventures in the Land of Dreams...

Good luck to all!

Yep. This definitely describes me. I find my creative wheels turn more at night than during the day. Even when I do finally go to bed, my mind is still on the story I'm writing, or an idea that I would like to develop into a story.
Well... When I am working nights... driving around on patrol... I write the stories in my mind. I talk out the conversations - work through the plot lines and the twists and turns - but I generally get most of my writing done early morning when I wake up and my house is quiet. If I could sit at work and write - then I would say most of my writing is done at night.

I wrote most of my novella, Welcome to Scranton, at night between 7 and 10 p.m. I'm generally a night person. But I did a lot of it between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. I found that my concentration in the morning was much stronger. There are fewer distractions, at least for me, in the morning.

That describes my style.  Also, while the world sleeps it's a lot quieter.  Am trying to reverse and get the gears grinding at 5 am.  May have to survive on two naps daily - 3 to 4 hrs each...?
Hint, it's 2am right now.
