Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, which is ironically a tale about banning books, was banned in several American states and schools around the world. The plot centres around fireman, Guy Montag, whose job is to burn books and the title refers to the temperature at which paper combusts. The work was published in 1953 during McCarthyism and was widely seen to be about censorship although Bradbury has refuted this.
Kay, I would not ban nor burn any books (at least not in this context).....Let the people read!!! So only then can they truly write (and write well) whatever the subject matter may be!! It's not the tool, it is the user who makes of it what they will.:) Hi scribbler.
How did I know that 451 and Lolita would be on that list? Still, I would never ban any book at all, no matter how far it went, or what lines is crossed. Hell, Lolita is about a 40 year old man in a relationship with a 13 year old girl, and fantasizes about having kids with her so he can molest them. Sick? Yes. Wrong? Yes. Ban it? No. Even something that crosses the line to that level has as much right to be on the shelf as something as innocent as Hello Kitty.
And believe me, there are far, far, far worse things out there than anything on that list.
