Play Submissions

     I am an aspiring playwright and recently I contacted Impact Theatre to ask about, "How does one submit works to them and what is considered to be an 'unpublished play' ?" I was inquiring because I do have my plays and other writings posted on Writers Network and was curious to know if that was technically considered to be 'published'.  

    I was relieved to find out that it wasn't considered published, but after the conversation with the young lady, she told me just to send the script to this email and they would review. I thought "Great!"  then some questions popped up in my head.  "I am in Fredericksburgh Va. and they are in California.  If they do choose to do my work Great!  But what if they have to edit, or the director has a slightly different artistic interpretation of the work. (Cause theatre works that way.)  Does he or she have to contact me, and how would this work, or do I just pray and hope that they don't bastardize my creative works?  How does this work, being states away?

   So I asked the questions I have yet to hear from them.  I was wondering if anyone out there has any input, advise or better yet experience it this area. I want to get my work out there, but I want it to be represented correctly in a reasonable light. As I said, it is theatre and the works and writing of playwrights are subject to artistic interpretation. It always has been and always will be, but what are the standards of this practice and where do the creative rights begin and end?

   I would appreciate input on this matter and I hope to learn allot from the people on this site.
