I know it doesn't neccessarily have to be a writer, but in my case it is. I love J.K. Rowling's writing and how she makes her stories un-put-down-able. It inspires me how she kept trying and trying to make Harry Potter a hit. Did you know Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone got rejected 12 times before it got published? I want to be that kind of writer.
My inspiration isn't a writer, well... one of them is, but my biggest inspiration comes from my Music. I don't listen to that crap stuff about drugs and having lots of sex, that kind of music makes me sick. I listen to music with lyrics, with meaning, with heart, with passion. I admit that I have a few songs just because they're heavy metal and get me in a good mood, but the majority of the stuff I listen to mean something to me.
I did! She spent five years creating the whole of Harry Potter's new found world instead of just slapping down on paper the first thing she thought of. She deserved her success. On another "did you know?" note, the book was called Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the UK to avoid confusion with another book.

One line in a song can get me started on a train of thought, so I know what you mean Andrew. Is there any artist you favor listening to for that purpose?

I don't think I'd be able to pick just one Artist that inspires me, but if I had to pick one, I'd probably pick either Dream Theater or Flyleaf; my two favourite bands at the moment. Both of them have some pretty amazing songs with some pretty amazing lyrics.

The Philosiphers stone? Really? That's incredible. I had no idea.

I would agree with Andrew.
Music is my best inspiration.
And J.K. Rowling is indeed an amazing writer.
