The question is: How does a writer know which words are specific to a particular age group? Unless you are an experienced writer and have become very familiar with the different age group vocabularies, you will need help in this area.

I really liked this article by Karen Cioffi. It's a subject you don't see discussed much and something every children's book writer needs to know.

I have never talked down to my kids and even though they are young their vocabulary is much larger than mine was at their age. That being said, there are mutliple meanings to words and phrases and its the meaning behind the words and how to express those to have the story live and breath that is also very much needed to be understood.

A child's imagination is a precious gem and needs the right light to shine.
