Congratulations Catherine. That's quite an accomplishment.

Dido to Anna. Catherine are you writing a short story thus 50,000 words. I have been thinking about releasing a short story but at 50,000 words, I'm thinking what's another 20 or 30,000. But is a short story considered 50,000 words?

Comment by Anna L. Walls on November 30, 2011 at 7:47am

I had to look up the numbers. According to Wikipedia a short story is under 7,500 words. A novelette is 7,500 to 17,500 words. A novella is 17,500 to 40,000 words. And a novel is over 40,000 words. I know I've found different ratings. I also discovered that the word count varies by age group.

Good work Anna! When looking through the Writer's Market, publishers state the word count on different genre. Thillers are 100,000 plus. Mystery is 70-90,000. And I believe sci-fi is the same as thillers. I remember reading somewhere short story novels that publishers want are between 40-50,000 words. I'm not certain on that. However your work is not in vain, the true divination of these different size writings are as you stated. Thank you...

Hi Robert and Anna. Yes anything above 50,000 words is generally considered novel length. My plan is to finish my first draft, which will end up between 60,000-70,000 words, and then edit the whole MS which will probably take me closer to 100,000 words. My published novel Love Hurts has just over 80,000 words, so it's a natural progression.

Oh and in my experience, a decent short story is no more than 8000 words, and a novella is around 35,000. This is based on the submission requirements I have seen on various publisher websites when promoting my work.

@ Cathrine Green, lol see just the opposit happens to me. I edited my book the Gargoyle keeper, which was 95,000 words, and it wound up going to 100,000 lol. I edited my book Cycles of Change (101,000) and it went to 149,000 and my publishing company is gonna have a fit lol.

@ Janet - lovely trailer and I'm intrigued! The book will certainly be on my to-read list next year.

@ Alexandria - ha ha that's funny! I think my Redcliffe books will end up like that, but I'm still learning to let loose creatively. I studied newspaper journalism at university, and was subsequently taught how to say a lot with few words. Now I have to remind myself that I can be free!

haha - You're not the only one to do that, Alexandria. Happens to me all the time.

Janet - because of my connection, videos give me fits. Good luck with it all.
