Authors, Writers, Publishers, and Book Readers

Hey everyone!

I was thinking about trying my hand at some children's poetry. I have written a couple of little stories for children that my family has enjoyed, but never gotten published.

I am uncertain how to start. Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome.  Thanks!

I'd start at the book store and find out if there is a market for children's poetry. I would think there is??? If not, write anyways and send them out with a cover page explaining what you are writing and for whom you are writing for. But NEVER EVER tell the publisher, your friends and family like your work. If the publishers like your work, they will publish you...Keep trying...

Thanks Robert.  I have received an invitation for a children's poetry contest and thought I would give it a whirl. After posting this I looked online and found several sites for Children's poetry. I think it will be a fun endeavor and actually a good exercise in letting my imagination run completely wild! I'm looking forward to seeing what all lies in my imagination that hasn't yet been uncovered. Should be interesting and fun.

As for my old short stories that my family and friends liked, I haven't even considered sending them in for publication for years. They are just little family treasures. :)

   Thanks again Robert.

I'm not possitive, but I believe Peter Rabbit, Huckleberry Finn, and some of the other greats were family treasures. Maybe it's time to edit and send them out...

Actually I am in the same boat. I have written a few childrens selections but have not published them due to lack of illustrations. I would assume the same illustration rule should apply to childrens poetry. They seem more visually stimulated.

I have a piece that I wrote for children and when looking for a publisher, I read that they don't want the writer to do the illustations. Just a thought!!!

I guess I needed to be clearer. The publishers will find the artist for the illustrations. However, if you can draw, they might use your drawings...I am only telling what I have read.

Have to concur, illustrations catch everyone and they are a requirement from publishers, whether needed depends on the target age. Don't be discouraged though, write some for yourself and if you need inspiration do what the best do, think back to your childhood and any special moments.
