Authors, Writers, Publishers, and Book Readers
I love all poetry. My favorite is the Japanese Haiku. I saw one in a diary book that said:
Five syllables here And now you've got seven more And now five. Happy?
I thought it was insulting to people who are passionate about peotry and can write this:
Fall wind is lovely
Summer is terribly hot
But the year goes on
I always thought it amazing to anyone who could write a haiku and still make it rhyme. I write poetry all the time.
I never really looked too much into poetry until last year. I like both rhyming and non and have read poets from both works. My nephew has written non rhyming poetry which is quite good.
I write both types of poetry.
Here is a line from a poem I've written for children:
"I am a jungle totem pole, so scared of the night ,when bad things happen, things I can't put right."
Or might it be written as:
I am a jungle totem pole,
so scared of the night ,
when bad things happen,
things I can't put right.
So that given me two ways of ending up with two poems yet using the same words. Which did you enjoy reading?
Cleveland, I read my poetry out loud when I can't decide what to do. I like the second way better simply because the separate line spacing gives me more of a pause for breath mentally and would give a child more time to recite it or read along. Can I make a suggestion? I'd change it slightly and make the third line "it's when the bad things happen" to match its rhythm better with the first line.
I am a jungle totem pole,
so scared of the night ,
it's when the bad things happen,
things I can't put right.
I've written a children's poem too, and I always imagine how a child would chant it in that delightful sing-song way they have. Take it or leave it of course. :)
