I'd be grateful for any tips this group might have on the subject of desktop publishing software. I plan to self-publish a non-fiction book that, along with text, will have quite a few tables and graphs (both b/w and color) that have been created in Excel. Which programs are best for this sort of endeavor? (or should I just stick with creating PDFs from MSWord?)  Someone suggested Adobe's InDesign, but it looks like that is a bit pricey (~$700).

I think pdf is your best bet, though there might be something better out there. With pdf, I'm told it's compatible with most eReaders too and your tables and such are unchanged.

Take a look at Scrivener. It might suit your needs and it has a very active and helpful users' forum.
