Authors, Writers, Publishers, and Book Readers
I'm not familar with lighting source I used lulu.com but I think its the same. Opening up an account with lulu cost me nothing. I had my booked pro edited from a free lance editor($500-$600). When I up loaded my manuscript to lulu I ordered a proof. When I got it the words were so small I couldn't read it. I had it pro formatted for $100. Then I got a proof and found mistakes on every page. I fix the mistakes with a friend proof reading, 2 months. It cost me $100 3 years ago to get an ISBN # and get my book listed on Brooker's list of books which put me on 33 online book stores, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I hope I helped

There are many things you can do that I can't. I post links on facebook and twitter nearly every day and on Google+ a couple times a week. You can probably go around with a box of books and talk to mall managers about getting some on their shelves. There's different strategies you can use there too. They'll probably only be interested in like half a dozen at the most; you can sell them all that they want outright (the hardest) or you can offer that they buy only the ones they succeed in selling - or offer them something in between. You will have to be available to keep up on it. You can also talk to some of the big bookstores the same way. My book is also in a couple virtual bookstores, one is for self publishers listed on amazon and one is just a friend on facebook who is trying to make a buck and help other writers. I think her books have to be listed on amazon too but I've never heard her say. Here's the first link ->http://www.breakthroughbookstore.com <- If you're on facebook, I can hook you up with the other one there.

In ultimate analysis, self-publishing is mostly a rip-off. They make money off the authors, instead of making money off book sales. My book, “the next genesis” is selling and it is getting great reviews only because of my personal effort to promote the book. Hence, the publisher was useful even though he did not Fulfill his contractual commitments. But the cost of promotion far exceeds royalties or profit even though the 2 Moon package cost me only 1200.00.
For more than one year I have been making a lot of research. I composed a small team and determine the root of the problem. POD is only good for retailers like Amazon. And when you do business with Amazon, and don’t provide a vehicle to market the book via the local bookstores, you do not get the visibility necessary to sell anywhere.
If you are serious about authoring, you should join Transmedia Press. Cost you nothing and you could become a co-founder. See the beginning at http://www.txgroup.org/App/Tools/36-Transmedia-Press.html#49 . Our marketing tool, the Public Voice soon will be online.

You're right about how self-publishing companies make their money from the author rather than the book. Even the so called free ones end up costing you something.
I checked out your link. What is it? It made no sense to me.
It made no sense to me either; How does an author get started in Transmedia?
Transmedia Press is a company in formation. If you are interested, register (it is free) and post a reply at http://www.txgroup.org/App/Tools/36-Transmedia-Press.html#49. I will contact you and provide you with details. Or send me a private message with your email in this site.

Just follow their instructions in their website. They will contact you with their "provider." But do not fool yourself, the cost of publishing is nothing compare to the cost of promoting a book. Just have it listed with Lightening Source does not sell books. See http://www.txgroup.org/App/Tools/36-Transmedia-Press.html#49. Transmedia Press is a company in formation which will provide you with promotion. Register and let us know that you are interested.
I think the observations made here are mainly correct. Particularly that self-publishing can be a deceptively expensive affair and that promotion is by far the biggest challenge facing indie authors.
We (publishmybookonkindle.com) will almost certainly do a better job of ePublishing your book, dollar-for-dollar, as we only charge a nominal formatting fee and retain a 10-30% interest in sales royalties of your book. Ultimately, it is this retained interest which pays off for you, as we work continuously on promoting your book...
