Using Createspace has been an easy self publishing unit for me. They connect with Amazon.com as well as their own sales methods and to date I have not complaints.

It's really hard to tell, Garry, if an agent will pick you up.  I think it will depend on now well your books have done so far or on how popular your genre is at the time.  I think the market is a bit flooded with vampire and werwolf stories just now, but your mysteries might be of interest.

 

Personally, I don't care for books with short stories in them.  Here I have this nice book in my hand, and suddenly some 50 to 100 pages in, the story is over.  That's just me though.  I have managed to group together a half dozen of my own shorter stories into a single document following a similar theme.  Maybe some day I'll see if I can publish it.

I have now produced and published several audio books, and have decided to offer this service to self-publishing authors. I have the ability to sell audio books through audible.com (a division of Amazon), and the ability to return up to 15% of the proceeds to the author. For every hour of narrated, edited, and mastered audio it takes approximately 14 actual hours of work, so my price of $200 per finished hour is really very reasonable. Each finished hour is usually about 10,000 words. So if your book is 70,000 words, then the audio book will cost $1400 to produce. That means that once 1400 copies are sold, it has paid for itself (audio books that sell for $6.75 generate 15% for the author, or about a dollar per). This, however, is in perpetuity, with no additional printing or production costs ever. Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks Michael. I always wanted my book as an audio book. I wish my budget would allow the cost. Maybe someday. Not that it's too high, just beyond my means. Do you have a website? Somewhere I might be able to hear a sample of your work? Something I might be able to promote on Facebook or Twitter?

You have a very nice, clear voice. You really should get a website. I use Weebly.com It's free and really rather nice.  A point where you can collect samples of your work would give people a single point to look for you. I wish you much luck. Maybe one day, I'll be able to hire you. I do like audio books and that is likely the only way my husband will ever read my work.
