In my soon to be published book "You Can Do It yourself Investors Guide" I explain how I have invested successfully in my 401k and IRAs the last fourteen years. First of all and most important is you have to believe in yourself and not let the naysayers scare you. Managing your own investments is not hard if you are willing to spend a few hours each week doing so. If you are familiar with, or willing to learn a spreadsheet program like Excel the process will be much easier. I give ten reasons why you should avoid mutual funds if at all possible in your 401k. I also discuss in depth the business cycle, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), dividend paying common stocks, Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs). I also discuss preferred stocks (the forgotten investment). Most line and graph charts do not consider dividends in their calculation of returns. In the "You Can Do It Yourself Investors Guide" book   Excel spreadsheets are used to show the total return of each example in any given year.
