Joan, the forum and Groups are a good place to start. Click the black tab at the top for Forum and you'll see the discussions. Just click them to read them and if you want to reply, type in the box and hit Add Reply. It's more or less the same as the way you commented here. 

If you want to add a new topic, hit the "+Add" button at the top of the forum to do so. 

You can also go to the Groups and join Groups you would like to be part of. Click the Group's name eg Fiction and then you'll see discussions created by members of that Group. Click the +Join button at the top to join the Group. Once you have you can Add a Discussion, comment or reply to anything there. Hope that helps. :)
