Authors, Writers, Publishers, and Book Readers
Here is a scenario with many POD publishers.
Your upfront fee to publish could be as low as $14! However, PODs rarely offer the author free
copies of their book. Also, your book (as an electronic file) remains with the
publisher. POD means print-on-demand. The publisher gets to keep a file of your
book and prints the books as needed. It is a fast and easy method of
publishing. But you will have to pay for this service!
If you would like 100 copies you will have to purchase the copies from the POD at the cover price of your books. (There are a few PODs offering discounts on author's purchase.)
If your books are selling for $11.50(average sale price) your cost would be $1150!
Many offer a 20% author’s royalty, some offer less. Let’s assume a 20% royalty. You would earn $230 on this sale.
Your cost to print 100 copies would be $1150-$230= $920
Here is the same scenario with DLITE PRESS, www.dlitepress.com.
Suppose you would like to print 100 copies of your book. The book is 5 x8 inches, 5.5 x 8.5
inches, 6 x 9 inches or 8.25 x 11 inches trim size. The book does not need
editing and there are 100 pages. You will also be submitting your own cover
design.
Your initial cost would be $599. (Total cost of printing with DLite Press is based on the number of pages and the number of books ordered.)
In this scenario we have not yet factored in the discounts (Remember these are limited time offers!)
$25 off on any purchase over $100 = -$25
25% discount on any publishing package= - $149.
$100 off if you publish within the first week of any month = -$100
Your total cost would be: $325*
You would get 100 books, shipped to any address in the USA, FREE!
If you sell any copies of your book all royalties are yours to keep. After paying our fees we
charge you nothing! These books are yours to sell, give away or market as you
choose.
I am sure you see the difference! Many PODs have a similar set up. They charge minimum upfront fees but hold your books hostage.
