Introduction

Now that Spring has sprung, Handy cannot wait to get back to fishing. In fact, earlier this week, we went to check on some of our favorite fishing spots to make sure they were free of ice and snow. Much to our surprise, some of them still had a fair amount of snow despite the number of warm days we have experienced. Since some of them are ready, we figured it is time to get the fishing gear ready to go. If you are wondering what to do to get your fishing gear ready, continue reading.

Rods and Reels

As they have been sitting all winter, they have likely become a little dusty and dirty. Well, now is the time to clean them up. Dust can do a number on your reel. Especially in the crank mechanism. Take a damp cloth and give them a good ol’ once over. Additionally, you may want to check the manufacturer’s recommendation on lubrication. If it is needed, this would be a great time to apply that. Since the fishing line has a way of developing a memory, take the time to change out the line if you need to. If you lost a lot of line last year, either add or replace that as needed.

Organize

Over the course of the fishing season, things have a way of finding themselves in the wrong location in your tackle box. Take all the stuff out of your tackle box and give it a wipe down as well. You know it needs it. After that, just make sure that you have the things where you need them. Pay special attention to your most used items and make sure that you can grab them when you need them. There is nothing worse than needing a piece of equipment and not being able to find it. Since you have this all out, this might be the time to label things. There are many different ways to do this, we suggest a label maker that you can put what you want on. You know the kind you had when you were a kid and labeled everything in the house.

Gear

When you are getting your rod, reel, and tackle sorted out, pay attention if you need to replace anything. If you used the last of the line, make sure you pick up some more. Likewise, with all the different components of your box. Make sure you have plenty of hooks, sinkers, jigs, soft baits, and scented baits. You never know what the fish are going to like on any given day. Be prepared for anything they are biting on.

Conclusion

Handy hopes that you are just as excited as we are about the upcoming fishing season. Too bad it is so short. We do like to do a little ice fishing as well, but nothing compares to getting out on the boat and just making a day of it. Speaking of boats, make sure that you check to make sure that it is ready to go. That just might be the most important piece of equipment you have.
