Julia, I understand Ernest Hemingway's most famous books were actually short stories that were made into really long, and very good movies. One of my favorites is The Snows of Kilimanjaro. Then there's The Killers. I was told by an author to write stories I enjoy reading, which is why I'm into action, adventure, mystery and suspense. Currently I'm working on my first comedy novel about retail (something completely new for me) because I'm working to increase my name to readers everywhere.

Short stories can be fun because you can whip them out quickly. I'd suggest utilizing your own experience in something and see if you can make it into a story. Like a kid who wants their first bike, but can't afford one because his/her family has come across hard times. They have a chance to steal one, but his true character comes through and he doesn't. Then he wins a prize in some raffle and low and behold it's a bike! He starts learning how to ride, crashes, breaks his leg, but his mother and father encourage him not to give up.
Believe it or not, I thought of this right now while coming up with ideas. I think I surprised even myself tonight. Anyway, I hope this helps!
