I am amazed at the amount of people who don’t have dreams. No, I don’t mean I shouldn’t have ate that burrito last night kind of dream. I mean those dreams that keep us going, those dreams that keep us pushing for more each day. I am floored to hear people almost settle for things in their nine to five jobs as if that is all they are. I’m starting to think that society has pressured many of us into thinking of our means of survival as the actual dream, primarily because of how our economic environment is. Jobs are hard to come by, so if you have one, you achieved a dream. Of course, I don’t wholly agree with that. I think people are scared to dream big. There are those few who grab their dream job, but I would argue that there are more people who are in jobs that they don’t like and is far from a dream. Parents are even teaching their kids to simply survive. In itself there’s nothing wrong with that, but what ever happened to You can be whatever or whoever you want to be. That phrase is what I was taught. It was what I grew up on.
Please allow the antagonist in me to do what he does best…antagonize. There are two sides to this coin. Honestly, dreams suck. The ones you hold for years are simply terrible. Each day you wake up and work on something that has a really good chance, if not, is destined to fail. Some people risk everything to achieve theirs, but end with nothing. If you really think about it, having a big dream is like asking people to come after you (think Joseph in the Bible). Blame it on the economy…blame it on your environment…blame it on your parents…whoever or whatever you blame it on the bottom line is, today’s world isn’t dreamer friendly. Today, either you stay in line, or be forgotten. After all, there is more opposition to the dream and dreamers than there are actual dreamers. And you know what else? Dreams hurt. Name a dream come true that didn’t take a lot of disappointment and pain to get there. I feel sorry for those who can’t help but dream, those who live their lives thinking ‘outside the box.’ They think so differently than everyone else, they become outcasts. It’s a shame.
Clearly, the antagonist in me is derived from a few of my own personal issues and fears. In the end, I think that is what stops most people. Fear. But I will say this: I’m not letting my fear stop me. I advise you do the same. Be fearless in following your dreams.
