"Sara! Sarabella! It's me, Cassie. Wh-what's happening to me? ...help!" A strange image of the moon reflecting in a puddle in a wolf paw in the mud made Sarabella wake with a start. She rolled over in bed and looked at her alarm clock. It read 4:30 A.M. Sara sighed and ran a hand through he hair. What was happening to her and her friends?
It all started in the forest behind Felicity's house. To be specific it was a place the girls referred to as the cove. It was a fairly large thicket, and the clearing had only a few trees and undergrowth in it. The rest of the trees in the forest seemed to lean in and make some sort of a leafy roof over to area.
The three friends Sarabella, Felicity, and Cassie had all been out somewhere between 10:30 and 11:00. They had been in the cove when they saw the white wolf. All three girls froze as the wolf took a few steps forward. sure, they had heard the howls before, but to see a wolf- this was rare for the girls.
The white wolf seemed to study them, then right there it lifted back it's head and howled. Felicity, Cassie, and Sarabella all tensed at the unexpected howl. Then the wolf's howl wavered and ended. The white wolf looked at the three once more, then turned and loped away.
Weird thing shad been happening since then. Especially dreams. Even now Sara lie in bed awakened from one of those dreams. She started to close her eyes in hopes to get back to sleep when her hand started burning. Sara yelped, then faltered and held her hand. She curled her fingers, closed her eyes, and tried to sleep away the pain.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
Sara reached over and smacked her alarm clock. "Ouch!" she snapped, pulling her hand back. Sarabella looked at her hand and stiffened. There on her palm was a fiery ashen paw print. It looked as though Sara had pushed down too hard and too long on a paw-shaped cookie cutter. 'Was this what was hurting my hand last night?' She thought. Sara tried to shake off an ominous feeling as she got ready for school.
Once Sarabella arrived at school she spotted her two friends Felicity and Cassie talking next to her locker. Sara smiled and started towards them.
Sara was actually new at the school. She joined in at the beginning of their last semester. Felicity and Cassie had gladly befriended Sarabella when she moved to the small Montana town. Felicity was an almost in-crowd trend setting type of girl, and Cassie was utterly artsy.
"Hi Sara!" Sarabella smiled and waved at Felicity as she jogged over. "Hey guys. What're ya talkin' about?" Felicity glanced at Cassie and gave a kind of lopsided frown. "Well, something that happened last night..." "What?" Sara pressed Cassie. "Well...this." Felicity said hurriedly. She flipped over her palm and Sara went silent. Cassie reached up her hand and turned it over slowly.
Each of their hands was marked with the same color and look of Sara's. The only difference was the symbol. Felicity had a heart, and Cassie, a star. "You too?" Sara asked. She flipped her hand as well. "This is weird." Felicity said. "Look, first period is going to start soon. Why don't we talk at the shack after school, okay?" Cassie suggested. Felicity and Sara murmured agreements.
Felicity's dad had built the shack for Cassie and Felicity when they were younger. A place for them to play or hang out. They kept it fairly clean. There was a shelf with some bottles of water and a few books, and a few chairs. To top it all off the shack had a large carpet in the middle of the floor. It was the girls favorite hang out and where they talked about everything.
School seemed to take forever, but it finally ended. Cassie and Sarabella met up at Felicity's house. Her parents explained she was already at the shack, so they started down there.
"I wonder what the markings could mean." Cassie said. Sara looked at her palm. "Who knows? But look, mine is already starting to fade back to normal." Cassie looked at her palm as well. "Hmm same here. Even weirder." Sarabella shrugged and they walked on. With-in a few minutes they reached their destination. The two girls walked in the shack, and went rigid with shock.
There, in the shack was Felicity, kneeling down. But next to her was someone unexpected. The white wolf.
