Danni, Michie, and I advanced down the long and winding driveway. Being as clumsy as I am, I slipped on the ice covered pavement about halfway down the driveway, but I simply got back up and continued walking. This is what winter in Rutland did to a person - falling on the cold hard ground soon became painless and casual.
Eventually, we got to the end of the driveway and the bus came rolling down the hill toward us. I threw the apple I was eating as far in the opposite direction as I could. I then turned up the volume on the iPod that I was listening to through my ear buds so I could hear the music over the screeching bus as it came to a stop.
I sat by myself and listened to loud music as I did most mornings. It gave me time to sit back, relax, and get my brain working before the long school day. I always imagined stories and played music to match it. The only thing I was imagining right now was World War Two. I imagined going back in time to World War Two, and putting an end to it through the power of music. I'd know everything that would happen, so I would always be one step ahead of the Nazis.
When we reached the school, I met up on the sidewalk with my boyfriend, Darius Collins.
"Hey, Darius!" I said.
"Hey, Jude!" he smiled at me to show his brilliant straight, white teeth. He took my hand in his, and we walked into the school together.
Most people said that Darius and I were the perfect couple just based on how we looked. Yeah, I guess it is true that we looked good together, but that's not why we date. Underneath his shaggy dark brown hair with bangs that nearly covered his amazing bright green eyes, underneath the piercings, and underneath that whole 'emo' getup is a really amazing guy. He's sweet and caring. Romantic and poetic. Smart and funny. We've been friends since toddlers, and we've been dating since the beginning of 7th grade. That was the longest relationship anyone has been in in this school. I just didn't understand why nearly every relationship only lasted about two weeks. And if a guy and a girl went out on one single date, everybody automatically thought that they were boyfriend and girlfriend. Why can't everyone just mind their own damn business and not get into everyone else’s supposed love life? It's stupid that they don't
When we got to our lockers near our homeroom, Darius stole a short kiss on my lips. If anyone had seen, neither we nor they had cared. We were all used to it by now.
"You doing anything after writing club today?" Darius asked me as he leaned up against his locker.
"Just chores. You can help if you want. We kinda need the extra help since everyone is getting ready for Hanikmas."
"True. I'll text my dad and tell him I'll be getting a ride home with you," Darius whipped his phone out of his pocket and sent the message. He put his phone away just as quickly as he had taken it out so that a teacher wouldn't see it.
"Cool," i said casually, smiling, partially at the fact that Darius and I were close enough that he could invite himself over my house whenever he wanted. I found that a bit amusing.
"Hey! Look, guys! Emo love!" a guy shouted from behind me. "How sweet," he said sarcastically. I knew that voice. I hated that voice. It was Dan Striker's voice.
You should know something about Dan. He and Darius were best friends back when they were little kids. By fourth grade, Darius realized what a jerk Dan is, and they've been enemies ever since. Now Dan always uses me to get to Darius.
"Shut up, Striker, or I'll break your face again!" I shouted angrily.
"I'll sue," he said simply.
"Money can't get you everywhere, and your good for nothing parents can't keep making you think that forever!" Darius argued.
"Name one thing you have that you didn't get with money!" Dan challenged.
"People who actually care about me, which includes the best girlfriend in the world -Jude!" Darius put his arm around my shoulder to show that we were united.
"Oh, please! She's nothing more than a dumb b****!" Dan yelled.
Darius's fist conencted harshly with Dan's face faster than a lightning strike. Dan instantly fell to the ground with a bloody nose.
"Darius! Stop!" I shouted at him as he continued to smash in Dan's face. Darius got up and stood next to me, giving Dan a change to squirm away and run to the principal’s office. Great.
"Thank you, Darius," I said sarcastically.
"Any time," he smiled.
A voice came onto the intercom. It was the school secretary, and she was mad, "I need Darius Collins and Adeline McCoy down to the office now!!" Whenever she said that, everyone knew we had caused some sort of trouble. They just knew.
"Well, let's go," I said, "Come on, Darius."
"They're only siding with him because his parents donate a bunch of money to the school all the time," Darius said as we walked down the busy halls to our awaiting doom.
"I know. I know. But what can we do?"
"Have The Beatles taught you nothing!??" Darius asked shocked apparently.
"What do you mean?"
"Let's start a revolution!"
“So tell me exactly what happened,” The principal said once we were in his dim, gray, boring office.
"Well, Darius and I were talking in the hallway, minding our own business, when Dan walks up to us and says - sarcastically, mind you - "How sweet! Emo love!" which I took very offensively because he considers people who dress like us freaks, and he's not afraid to say so. Dan then called me a b****, and Darius felt the need to protect our rights as students. So yes, he did punch Dan, but I believe it was for good reason."
"Alright. I tell you what. None of you get suspended or have to serve detention, but you all will have to see the guidance counselor at least twice a week until further notice, starting after vacation. But if this happens again, it will have serious consequences. Understand?"
"Yes." Dan, Darius, and I said simultaneously.
"Good" she said, "Now off you go. Homeroom is starting, and you don't want to be late!" the three of us promptly went out of the office back to our homerooms.
“Nice going! You really saved us. I thought for sure we’d get suspended this time!” Darius high-fived me.
“That’s why you always let me do the talking!” I said as we strolled down the deserted hallway.
“Where have you been? I’ve been waiting for you!” Mr. Haste, our homeroom teacher, boomed as we approached the classroom.
“Principals,” Darius and I said nonchalantly, and then we walked into the room.
“Watcha guys do this time!?” My best friend, Paige asked excitedly. The whole class waited anxiously for our reply.
“I punched Dan in the face ‘cuz he called my girlfriend a b****,” he said. Everyone sighed in disappointment.
“Why can’t you get in trouble for an interesting reason next time?” Paige whined. My and Darius’s getting in trouble was one of the schools only forms of entertainment, since we lived in Rutland.
“Paige! We’re not your TV set!” I defended.
“Eh, whatever,” she replied.
The announcements came on over the intercom. The secretary mumbled a few sentences that I didn’t pay much attention too, except for the one stating that there would be a school dance on Friday. I loved school dances! The secretary then called a bunch of kids down to the office, we said the Pledge of Allegiance, and then we went to our first period class.
Mine was German. And we were starting our World War Two unit today.
