Brutal honesty: That is what J. Evan Johnson delivers in this novel. If you are not prepared for some naked raw emotions, festering needs, issues with self-discovery and being true to one self, then don’t grab this novel. If you are in need of introspective thought, a bit of soul searching and making a laundry list of emotional wants and needs then here you go. Is the novel really all that deep and complex? No I read it , that should clue you in on some of it, but it does get to the point and it makes its point. Here is what is between the covers:

“To tell is to perceive. To tell is to inform.

When it's Too Late to Tell features four characters, Mark, Craig, Jade and Berta, all holding issues from the past that suffocate every lasting relationship they have. Mark, an elementary school teacher, and his wife Jade, a pharmacy technician, hold deep secrets from each other; secrets that cause a rift in their marriage. Mark's best friend Craig lives his days as a financial planner, struggling with the idea of God, questioning His existence each day. Indeed, Craig once believed and held strong to his faith, formerly being a youth minister for a well-known church, but some strenuous events turned his life upside down. If it weren't for a helping hand, his life would have ceased to exist. Berta, Craig's assistant, stands to be the most faithful, although the horrors that happened to her in her past would allow anything but. One part to her past in particular binds her, forcing her to believe that her entire existence boils down to a single man's dying wish. In this mesmeric story of relationships, each of the four must realize what issues truly hold them back and what issues to reveal before it is too late.”

This is a departure for me of the stuff I normally read. Usually as you know the stuff I read is a bit lighter in fare. Being out of my comfort zone is okay on occasion. J. Evan Johnson is a self-published author that has put together a novel that is something that I really enjoy, a novel with heart, drive and totally honest as we get it right from the author’s head and heart. The read for me, as engaging as the characters are, is the author in all this. There is no distillation, no watering down, no filtering of his thoughts and direction as he takes these characters through their journey of discovery. That for me was what made it fresh, exciting and vibrant. I read novels for many different reasons; this is one of the most important ones for me: my ability to connect with the author’s message, his insights, and his direction. J. Evan Johnson scored a hit on all counts. Go into this with eyes and heart wide open, otherwise you may miss the message and the intent. Enjoy.
