I look for a publisher to publish books and to promote the sales of their books without cost to the writer.  So many today want to charge the author for promotions and for publishing and that seems to be the way they make their money?  I expect a publisher to edit, copy edit and produce professional look for the book.

I agree! Those wanting to have the writer pay for everything are self publishers. I wish the contacts for those publisher stated as such. Therefore writers looking for publisher who offer advances and royalities will not waste time with those not offering those things. BE UP FRONT!!! It only make sense! If the writer isn't looking for self pushing, he or she will not bite.

Choosing to pay to publish your book does not make you not officially published, nor does it remove any credence to your work, or status as an author. The key to selecting a publisher is to choose one who markets and stocks your book. Simple as that...

And Rebecca, the author deserves to be part of every part of the creative process. The cover is crucial and thus should with a glance define the book. As far as a URL, the solution is not META tags, yes we do use them a lot. However, my point was around the individual trying to remember, and thus typing into the web address bar the name. Thus the possible confusion over two, 2, new etc... We have thus far had no issues with the name URL use.

And Robert, as far as advances you could possibly get one, however advances don't quite work the way most authors think they do.

I'm not so worried about an advance as mush as promoting the book myself. I want the publisher to do that especially if they are keeping 70% plus of the profit.
