Authors, Writers, Publishers, and Book Readers
If you are self publishing Xlirbis is the way to go. It is the only company who includes editing costs in their packages. I saved over $3000 with both of my books this way, Hope this helps!
Why don't you publish your book yourself? I publish through CreateSpace for paperback and Kindle Direct Publishing for a kindle edition. They are both easy and well explained every step of the way, and if you mess up, it's easy to back up and fix it. SmashWords supports several other eReader formats, but I find them complicated. I've only ever had one other request for something besides kindle. Paying for publishing only lines the pockets of the publishing company. I would strongly advise against taking that step unless you know what you're doing.
Forgive my ignorance but how do they edit and format a book that is 100,000 long. If you mess up it is the editor that catches it when you have read it countless times but over look the simplest misspellings because your eye won't catch it. Also who picks the front and back cover- this is how I buy a book. Taking a publishing course is extremely helpful. You learn what you can and can't do for yourself effectively.
I'm going to assume you are directing this question at me. There are tricks to the editing that can get you past the annoying typos and one of them is to have your computer read the text. Another is to have two or three readers go through it. They will have valuable opinions, and there's nothing like a fresh pair of eyes to catch mistakes. As far as a cover, you can get a good cover for as little as $60. That's what I'll be paying for my next cover, and I'm very happy with my last cover from this person.

Are you active on any social media accounts? Facebook or LinkedIn for example? If you are, just ask. I'll do it but I do charge for my time $1 per page and you'll get a fairly complete edit, though I'm no expert. See the writing tab on my website http://AnnaLWalls.com . At any rate, with self publishing in this manner, advertising and promoting your book is up to you - it would be up to you as well with a pay-to-publish company, so i'd strongly advise you to join as many forums as you can.

I would suggest Outskirts Press self publishing. I just published my first book with them and they are great to work with.
This string is over a year old, but that's okay. Of course Outskirts Press gave you a good book, but it will be a long time before you break even on sales. Any publisher you pay to publish your book isn't interested in your book, they are interested in your pocket book

Well everyone wants to make money. But the fact is, if the book doesn't sell they don't make money. If a book sells well it is a gold mine for them.
what will be the gold mine for them is what they can get the writer to pay them to do.

Well the writer pays for publishing, then it is all about the book selling. But if you do not want to self publish that is your choice. You have to make that decision,
That's just it. The writer doesn't have to pay for publishing. In fact they shouldn't. If you pay for publishing, they get their dime from you, not from your book.
