Authors, Writers, Publishers, and Book Readers
Just a quick shout out here to the Authors.com community that I've posted this week's story to my blog, The Charred Tree. The story this week is part of the serial, Diaspora, and is entitled Prickles and Thorns. As part of a serial it does build upon previous installments--a full list can be found via the "Serial Storylines" link at the top of the blog. Comments and critiques are always welcomed and appreciated.
Enjoy!…

Yesterday was a writing day for me and I made some progress on one of my serials. After the writing was done I made the rounds of Facebook and Twitter and this posted by my friend, J.R.D. Skinner:
"Being a writer means sitting in your chair till your coffee is cold, and then drinking it anyway."
This has to be one of the most profound statements I've ever seen and I wanted to share it (with J.R.D.'s…

My latest release is my first historical fiction A Handful of Blossoms (ISBN 9781471727962), 96 000 words, self-published on Smashwords and Lulu. Paranormal romance. Written in form of a diary, which genre (epistolary, confessional) was so popular in the 18th century and which sounds so comprehensible in our time of blogging, web-diaries and web-journals, the novella may be called a love story. A story of a sixteen-year-old damsel and her weird marriage. Time: 1764, a year after the Seven…

This week has been a series of hot, hot days. I am so glad to be able to leave this state, transport down to Florida to pick up this week’s featured author. We’re off to New York City and the famous Algonquin Hotel at 59 West 44th Street in the heart of Manhatten. Built in 1902, the Algonquin has been a standard for luxury and comfort for decades. They’ve recently…

This new breakout book by EL James, just acquired by Random House, has gone through a plethora of reactions from readers and writers alike. You can say it has drawn Good, Bad and Ugly comments and feelings from anyone who has been touched by it, or rather, clobbered over the head by it.
The Good:
Fifty Shades originated from a fan fiction site, and was more or less written as kind of a Twilight knockoff, with eventually, the character names and settings, changed to…

When considering my interpretation of a breakout novel, for this topic I'm referring to a book that is pre-publication and pulling in a lot of interest from either agents or editors. That's why I phrased it, "Do You Think...?" A breakout novel can also be one that immediately takes off in sales, garners voluminous reviews and climbs the best-selling ranks in very short order. That's post-publication. We've seen some of the self-published e-books do this just recently. But what if you're in…
