I had my first venture into the High Street today armed with my book in the hope of persuading Waterstones and Smiths to order copies of Whispers on the Wind, and hopefully allow me to do a book signing.
I am not good at promoting myself and found the task very daunting. Waterstones were pleasant but the manager who deals with this wasn't there. So, I left my business card with a copy of Whispers on the Wind, took the name of the person concerned and have instructions to call back in…

Elizabeth, welcome to authors.com …from The Chuck!
I write sci-fi novels filled with adventure, mystery, romance, drama, horror, and comedy… Sci-fi for every human to enjoy. I'm also a published poet. When you have a few free moments, please check out my Authors page and a few of my videos and blogs I have recently added. Many of my blogs consist of free to read enjoyable sci-fi stories I plan to unite within a book titled: 'Epic Marvels. My newest sci-fi novel: 'They!', which is somewhat related to the 1954 sci-fi classic movie, 'Them!'.
Let me know if you'd like to become friends.
The Chuck!
I have you as a friend on my page... I haven't checked this side of things out. Let me investigate. There must be a button or something we click on the author's profile.... Or maybe someone can enlighten us!
After the thread of discussion you have the option to add as friend - you don't have the option because we are already friends as I invited you! x
Thanks, Liz
I (hope I've) left a comment somewhere as an introduction, but knowing how good I am at LinkedIn and FaceBook, it's probably disappeared into the ether. Can you see it, I wonder?
It says:-
Good day everyone, and thank you for the welcomes.
I have been writing stage plays for 20+ years and currently have 37 published and performed throughout the world. My website www.scripts4tehatre.com has details, photos, etc. if anyone's interested.
I have written something like 18 short novels that are best described as "adult" - not my first choice but it helps to pay bills! These have been published as paper and ebooks under four noms-de-plume.
My most important project (to me at least) is a full length crime thriller (150,000 words or so) I've called "Time to Kill", which is a well-researched, but fictional, book about a couple of serial killers. It was accepted as a launch title by a company called Arcturus a while ago, for their new crime imprint but, ultimately, they decided not to go ahead with the imprint (it being quite different from their core business of children's books, cookbooks, puzzle book and so on). At least it gave me the confidence that it's good enough, and I have 2 sequels in the framework stage. I'm just wading through the world looking for an agent and/or publisher now! Any advice much appreciated.
Hi Ian, Yes, got the message! Crime thrillers that's my territory, with psychological, suspense thrillers. I have a trilogy out that could continue (Killing me Softly Trilogy). I may come back to that when I have finished the sequel to Whispers on the Wind, which I am passionate about and is very different from the others. It is set in Wales between the wars and focuses on the hardships of one family and in particular young Carrie who faces life affirming and shattering experiences that shape her into a woman never to be forgotten. I am now working on the sequel, Shadows on the Moon.
It is tough, getting an agent and published. I have an American agent for my screenplays and an American manager - but still trying to sell one to get made! I have been optioned many times and have made some wonderful contacts. My screenplays and plays are under my name of Liz Spear but my novels are under my stage name of Elizabeth Revill.
There is something called First Writer Alerts, where I found my publisher. I will email you with the link, unless you already subscribe. It is worth it. My son, Ben Fielder, also found publication through this.
I also write children's stories but haven't done anything with them. I am currently working with an illustrator on one project to present to the world. I have also, adapted it for animation and have a UK animator interested. We will see! So my writing is quite diverse. I have had a number of stage plays performed (and a few published with you - 6 I think!)
I think we just have to keep at it! the only failures are those who give up!
I know how disappointed you must be with getting so far down the line to publication only to have the rug pulled out from under your feet. I am sure many of us here can empathise with that.
My first three were published by a small publisher who knew me as we had attended a writing group together. He specialised in local history and I was his first foray into fiction. It was a big learning curve and although it looks good on the CV it wasn't the wisest choice and I committed all three to him. Never mind. I have higher hopes for this latest one
Nice to meet you Elizabeth. Welcome aboard. :) I hope you like it here! I look forward to reading what you share with us. The people are nice, trust me.
Thank you, Scribbler - great I.D. by the way! I am new so folks will have to bear with me but I believe it will be not only friendly here, which it is proving to be, but helpful to us all. Happy New Year to everyone and here's to a busy and productive 2012.
Elizabeth - Wow I'm impressed with your CV, and also thank Sarah for believing I'm a mentor for marketing. I suspect I might be a few pages in the book behind you, but happy to share thoughts and ideas. Also will be checking out your work. message me and we can catch up
